Early Spring Vegetables Workshop

Here are some photos from the HOH March 21st Class on Early Spring Vegetables.

There was a great turnout! Master Gardener Phil Ramey (center, with tool) instructed the class.

Hoop Houses

 Doug Hilton showed gardeners how to make raised bed Hoop Houses.  Hoop Houses act as temporary greenhouses to keep frost from killing seedlings.

Future Happenings at HOH

Future:   Planter for an Herb, Sensory Garden for children of all abilities & disabilities.

Future:    Water Line to run from middle of garden to the west, so that gardeners will have access to hose and water from that side of the garden. 

Also possibly in the future....
HOH, along with United Way, Kingsport Housing, City of Kingsport, D.B.H.S. FFA Volunteer Agriculture class, and others hope to help Lee Family Learning Center build a children's garden near Lee apartments. This garden would be a great interactive and learning activity for children as well as providing families with fresh produce. This idea fits perfectly into Harvest of Hope's mission

Harvest of Hope Community Garden helps individuals and families in Kingsport, Tennessee grow food for themselves and their community.

A 'RAD' Workshop

On May 17th at HOH, a Gardening Workshop was held to demonstrate the planting of summer vegetables and to help members plant various seedlings.  Vegetable seedlings planted included cucumber, tomato, and bell peppers.

Tomato Seedlings root/stem can be planted horizontally
 to provide better support for plant stem (ie. deeper).

Bell pepper seedling's roots are loosened before planting.

Members also harvested various Spring crops such as radishes (top photo and below), kohlrabi. [Also peas, broccoli, etc. - not shown]

Below, member gardeners harvest their crops, plant their seedlings, and weed and maintain their beds.

Class Learning Implemented at Home...

Raised Bed

Raised bed built at home.

On March 1st, a class was held on how to build raised beds. One of the participants, Sally Richard, took what she learned and put it into action by building a raised bed of her own.  Way to go, Sally :)

Here is another example of how one of our HOH participants implemented at home (here shown in photo, April 23rd), what they learned previously at Spring Vegetable Gardening Class (April 12th).  This photo was submitted anonymously.

A Few Tidbits for Garden Members

Happy Spring!

Here are a few tidbits of information for our Harvest of Hope (HOH) Community Garden Members.

   



 
• Master Gardeners (MG's) will be on hand at the HOH Community Garden at 10am-ish in the mornings on:
  
  Mondays, Wednesdays, & Saturdays.
  [May possibly be available some Saturday evenings (TBA)]

• A Bulletin Board is up on the left-hand side of garden shed for any announcements, current info, forms, etc.
• Got Questions?  Go to the Garden on the above days to talk with MG's in person.  If you have a question, and cannot meet at those times, leave a message on the bulletin board on the left side of the garden shed.
• In addition to weeding, watering, and maintaining your own
  
  raised bed(s), Volunteer Garden Members are asked to maintain the space surrounding their raised bed by weeding the gravel area (& disposing the weeds/trash).

    

• Garden Compost Bags recently donated by Lowes [Thank you]. Available for member use.

• NEW!  Raised Bed Labeling
  
  

• Coming Soon: Weigh Station
  This will be put in a covered area next to existing shed. Although members can take home some of produce that they grow for themselves, they are encouraged to log (see forms by bulletin board) and donate some of these foods to the Food Pantries, etc.  See FeedKingsport.org.    The weigh station will be used to weigh vegetables that are donated.
